With "Vignettes: Out of the Darkness... Into the Light" (on display August 2013), Mary Ann Caffery presents her first all-photography exhibition at BRG. Caffery has been using photography primarily as inspirations for her paintings and glass work for years, but this time around felt photography best portrayed her subject. The exhibition focuses on what the artist observed on a foggy Baton Rouge morning while walking around the popular LSU lakes. Having stumbled upon a subplot of egrets, she became consumed by what she "observed to be a surreal setting" that "looked like an ancient, choreographed stage production in which the birds were the actors, entering stage left, exiting stage right." In her photographs, she captured an atmosphere that is often grainy and portrays a sense of mystery and time standing still.
A BRG artist member since 1987, Caffery has studied with prominent designers and artists in the United States, France, Germany and Canada. Her work has been included in the Corning Museum's annual New Glass Review three times and is owned by museums in Japan, Germany and the US. Her mosaic work can be seen in the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport and the Lafayette Regional Airport. She has also completed numerous stained glass works for public and private clients, including art for the 2nd District Police Headquarters in New Orleans. She is also artistic director of Caffery Gallery in Baton Rouge.
